Tell caregivers, teachers and the school nurse about your child’s allergies and the medications they take. You should also talk to the gym teacher if your kid suffers from outdoor allergies.

MAKE SUGGESTIONS

It’s not out of line for you to ask school officials to maintain best anti-allergy practices, such as using high-efficiency air filters, keeping windows closed on high-pollen days and mowing the lawns when children are not present.

EDUCATE YOUR CHILD

Talking to your child about allergies in simple terms is a good place to start. Explain the things and places that could trigger allergies so they know what to watch out for, such as mold in the bathrooms and gym locker room, grass in the sports fields and playgrounds and dust in classrooms.

COME UP WITH A PLAN

You can’t control every environment that your child is exposed to, so come up with a plan to help them cope with their symptoms. If your child is affected by blackboard dust, ask the teacher to let them sit at the back of the classroom. If pet dander is a problem, they should stay away from the class hamster.
